Beyond the property market, living in Croatia
Living in Croatia offers many advantages over living in the UK, and the better weather is only the start! Many people are surprised when they discover the low cost of living, quality of education, low crime rates and other benefits.
Croatia is a stable democracy that's well on track for joining the EU. Economically, the currency, the kuna, has been shadowing first the Deutschmark and latterly the euro. Inflation is low and the major banks are all now either Italian or Austrian-owned. The infrastructure is well developed, with a good and expanding fast road system and good telecommunications. ISDN is generally available, with broadband becoming available in some cities. Mobile telephony from VIP and T-Mobile covers most of the country. HT, the principal telephone operator, belongs to Deutsche Telekom. Unemployment is relatively high but this varies considerably, both regionally and seasonally.
Croatia is divided into several different regions, each with its own climate and features. Most people will have heard of the coast, running down from Istria in the north, near Italy, to beyond Dubrovnik in the south. This has a Mediterranean feel to it, with mild winters and warm summers, and is very cosmopolitan, with people from all over Europe staying there, overlaying an essentially Italian culture. Foreigners looking for business opportunities are likely to look here first. A very high proportion of Croatians on the coast speak at least one other language and communication is rarely a problem.
Istria offer tranquillity but at the same time an exciting life for those looking to be entertained, the inland is relaxing, nights on the coast have plenty of activities to do.
