What can you expect of Croatia when buying property in Croatia
Croatia is back on the map after the war and the resulting period of uncertainty in the country. The war was over ten years ago and, although many Europeans have been returning gradually anyway, the big British tour operators have again featured Croatia in their 2004 programmes.
Visitors have been pleasantly surprised to find how well organised Croatia now is, with new roads, smart hotels, internet cafes and even CD postcards. Croatia is regularly in the news, both for its world beating sportsmen and women, and for its amazing coastline, with thousands of beautiful islands. For many, expecting a landscape littered with old Yugos and Trabis, the preponderance of new cars may come as a surprise - this isn't a broken down former communist country desperately trying to find its feet.
The former Yugoslavia always had a good standard of living, and while the troubles of ten years ago slowed it down, since the war Croatia hasn't looked back. With a fundamentally sound economy, linked first to the deutschemark and later to the euro, the Croatia government has successfully rebuilt their country. The currency - the kuna - has been stable, inflation low, unemployment contained and displaced refugees gradually decanted from the hotels in to purpose-built apartments.
These days Croatia - while mainly Croat and Catholic - is host to many minority groups, all of whom seem to do well. Many bakers and jewelers are Albanian, while all the former Jugoslav nationalities are on the coast, living and working alongside their neighbors. For many years, Croatia solved some of its unemployment problem by allowing building workers to go to Germany, much as Irish builders went to the UK looking for work, and they returned for high days and holidays, bringing more useful hard currency back with them. With the downturn in the German economy, many have now returned to Croatia, bringing with them modern building skills. Consequently, building standards are high.
