Croatia, the green and clean country

Croatia has some 4.5 million people, a million of them in it is a country of contrasts. Its geography is immensely mainland has a long indented coastline as long as the British south coast, and then there are thousands of islands, not all inhabited - a yachtsman's paradise. In the East, there is Slavonia, an extension of the Grej Plain, known to the Romans as Panonia. The region focuses on Osijek and is a rich agricultural area. In the Danube marshes, in the north east, water birds thrive and are a big draw for the tourists.

In the north is Zagorije, a hilly region with many fine fairytale that formed part of the Military Border that protected the southern flanks of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from invasion. There are several spas - the spa in Krapinske Toplice has an internationally recognized heart hospital attached to it. Varazdin is an interesting, yet surprisingly quiet, baroque city that was once the capital city.

Zagreb is a charming old Austro-Hungarian city with an atmospheric old town and a strong cultural scene. The old city, perched a hill and reached by a funicular railway, contains the Sabor or parliament, is still gas lit and in winter seems straight out of Graham Greene's and Orson Welles' atmospheric film The Third Man. There are many museums and the opera house is particularly noteworthy. Even the main railway station is a splendid Austro-Hungarian building facing onto the beautiful gardens that bisect the city.

Zagreb also features on the rock music circuit, with top international rock bands regularly playing one-night gigs. Despite being Central European in appearance, it has Mediterranean feel, with everyone passing the time of day at the dozens of pavement cafes.

Between Zagreb and the coast is Gorski Kotar, one of Europe's last wild areas, a hilly area covered in forests teeming with wildlife. Wolves, bears, wild boar and deer are just a few of the animals to be found here. The scenery is stunning, both in the summer months and throughout the winter. It has its own micro climate and is the coldest place in degrees, getting heavy snowfall in winter.
