Croatia, the emerging property market
Croatia was, until recently, little known by the general public worldwide. Yet the popularity of Croatia as a tourist destination can be - traced to the 1970s, when facilities were first developed on the Croatia part of the Adriatic coast.
To begin with, most of the tourists were visitors from nearby countries - mainly Italy, Germany and Austria -who knew quite a lot about the country from their mutual history and geographical proximity.
Croatia culture and tradition is similar to Italian and Austrian, partly because of their shared religious background. Croats were baptised in the 7th and 8th centuries and since then, the region has fostered Roman Catholicism. Moreover, for almost four centuries (between 1527 and 1918) Croatia was part of the Austrian Empire. In addition, some parts of Croatia coastline have been influenced by Italian ideas, resulting in a similarity of architecture, lifestyle and ways of thinking.
During the last five years, Croatia has become increasingly attractive to foreigners looking for real estate investments. The clean environment, relatively low levels of property development on the coastline and the mild Mediterranean climate all add to the allure. The majority of purchases have been of properties on the Adriatic coastline, including the regions of Istria, Kvamer and Dalmatia.
Many foreigners are buying property in Croatia to get their own place in the sun but others as an investment opportunity in this emerging property market. It is expect property prices to raise with Croatia ascension in the EU in the very near future.
